Description
In the Baby Boomer era Marjorie Sullivan Lee, with a degree in economics from the University of Chicago, after a short career became a stay-at-home mom for six children – two daughters, Mary Beth and Nancy and four sons, Peter, Terry, David, and Kevin.
However, Marjorie and her husband John were social-action oriented and with the birth of Kevin, who was identified as a person with Down Syndrome, their lives were transformed as advocates for persons with cognitive disabilities. They shared that role for more than four decades. One son often stated that Mom was a stay-at-home mom who was never at home if disability issues called. John provided financial support for Marjorie’s volunteerism.
Since John’s death from health problems related to Parkinson’s Disease, Kevin and Marjorie have continued as housemates in Glen Ellyn, Illinois where Marjorie has pursued her computer skills to write an account of overcoming obstacles to inclusion for persons with cognitive disabilities. Typical of her generation, Marjorie’s computer efforts needed assistance from grandsons Brian Lee and Paco McCullough and friend Richard DuBois.
Her grandmotherly role, has been augmented through daughter-in-law Debbie, and now includes two step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
